Tennessee Auto Insurance
Reader’s Question:
When did the auto liability law take effect in the state of Tennessee?

Thank you for asking Jean.
Tennessee drivers are not required by law to have auto liability insurance to be able to register a motor vehicle or get a drivers license. All drivers however, are subject to the Financial Responsibility Law of the state. This Financial Responsibility law is from 1977. It requires a motorist to show proof of complying with the law by either documentation of an car insurance from an insurance company that is licensed to do business in TN.
If the motorist is unable to provide evidence of insurance they can show a certificate from the Department of Safety that notes that a cash deposit or bond has been posted in the amount that is required of them. The driver may also show proof that they are qualified as a self-insurer. Most people purchase an auto insurance policy to the liability limits of 25/50/10 set by the state.
You can get more information regarding this by visiting this website at Tennessee.gov or you may speak to your insurance provider regarding the subject.
Goodluck!
