Reader’s Question:

My boyfriend borrowed my vehicle to buy something from the grocery store and he was rear-ended a driver who proceeded to drive off. I would like to know if I make a claim from my car insurance company in Knoxville, Tennessee to cover the damages to the bumper, will my auto insurance be affected since my boyfriend is not on my car insurance policy.

Samantha

Knoxville, TN

You will have to verify with your insurance company to determine if your car insurance coverages is extended to your boyfriend while he was driving your car under under your car insurance policy terms. If you give permission to somebody to drive your vehicle, normally car insurance coverage extends to them.

If your boyfriend resides in the same household with you and you did not add him as a licensed household motorist your insurance carrier may deny the claim however if he resides somewhere else and occasionally borrows the vehicle your insurance carrier in Knoxville, Tennessee will likely not take issue with his driving it. If your insurance carrier does not have an issue with your boyfriend driving the vehicle then you should be able to make a car insurance claim against your collision coverage.

Reader’s Question:

I plan to travel for extended period of time and will not be taking my vehicle. Is it possible to have my car insurance suspended to save money in Knoxville?

Sandra

Knoxville, TN

Most states require that all registered cars carry a minimum amount of insurance coverage, thus suspending your insurance coverage may also mean dealing with the hassles of canceling or suspending your registration and reinstating it when you get back.

Whatever you do, do not stop paying your car insurance premiums. You may choose to cancel your car insurance policy in Knoxville, Tennessee, and then buy a new policy when you get back but know that a canceled auto insurance policy can appear on your credit report, and can make it extremely hard and expensive for you to obtain car insurance coverage in the future.

You have to weigh the insurance costs of canceling your auto insurance coverage and starting it again versus canceling your car insurance and car registration and then starting your auto insurance and car registration again.

I might be dumb for now about Nashville-Davidson, Tennessee auto insurance since I just crossed from SC. I’d loot for someone who can give me a quick guideline to TN auto insurance requirements.

Mardi

Nashville-Davidson

Motorists in the state of Tennessee are not required by law to have liability insurance in order to register a car or obtain a drivers license; but all motorists are subject to the state’s Financial Responsibility Law. This Financial Responsibility law is from 1977 and requires a motorist to show proof of compliance with the law by either documentation of a car insurance ,binder or declaration page of a car insurance policy from an insurance carrier that is authorized to do business in Tennessee.

If the motorist does not provide proof of car insurance they can show a certificate from the Department of Safety showing that a cash deposit or bond has been posted in the amount required to them or the motorist must provide proof that they are qualified as a self-insurer. many people comply with the Financial Responsibility Law of 1977 by buying a car insurance policy to the liability limits of 25/50/10 set by the state. This liability limits stands for $25,000 for bodily injury liability per person up to $50,000 per accident and $10,000 for property damage liability per accident.

Reader’s Question:

Hi, I would like to know if it is possible for two single individual to share the same car insurance policies in Nashville-Davidson, TN. We both own our own vehicles and we are not related.

Allan

Nashville-Davidson, TN

Some insurance companies in Nashville-Davidson, TN may permit you and the other person to share a car insurance policy if you both live together as roommates.

However, if you instead live separately in different residences then its highly unlikely that you could share one auto insurance policy.

If you cannot find an insurance carrier that will allow 2 individuals to be in one policy but are roommates then you will likely have to list each other as motorist on your separate policies.

You may talk with your current insurance provider to find out if they will permit you to add your roommates vehicle onto your policy or your vehicle on his. If you are both living in the same household some insurance carriers will permit both cars to be listed on one policy.

Car Insurance Cancellation in Tennessee

Reader’s Question:

Is there a grace period in the state of Tennessee if your car insurance was canceled because of past due amount?

Harry

Murfreesboro, TN

While other types of insurance, health or life, may permit a grace period for your insurance policy, car insurance does not. In TN there are insurance laws in place that regulate how an insurance company must tell you of a cancellation because of non-payment, etc but not that there is any type of grace period that must be extended to a policyholder due to past due amount

If your car insurance policy cancelled because of non-payment you need to try to get your insurance policy reinstated or get insurance on your vehicle from a new insurance company or face penalties.

The Tennessee legislative branch has discussed getting harsher penalties in the books for operating a vehicle without insurance since there are so many uninsured motorists on the roadway. Make sure you dont get caught driving without insurance or let your insurance lapse for a very long time. If you do then you will have to face penalties and fines plus find it harder to get car insurance.

Q: Since I have a non owner SR22 policy, I’ve noticed that there are a bunch of car-related discounts which I can’t get. What discounts can a person who doesn’t own a car receive on their car insurance policy?

A: Naturally, the actually number and breadth of discounts you are able to receive will depend on the company you buy your non owner SR22 from, since all policies differ, but most companies have many industry standards on their lists of available discounst, so the suggestions I make will be available from most companies.

You can get many discounts on your non owner SR22 insurance which are education or employment related. Discounts like these include good student discounts, discounts for students who attend college far from home, discounts for people with math or science degrees, for people who join teacher unions or whose jobs offer group discounts.

You can also get many discounts by combining things. For example, you can get a discount on your non owner SR22 policy by purchasing it with a company you also have other types of insurance, such as health, life, or home owners insurance. By adding all the members and cars in your household on a single policy, you can also get a lower rate.

SR22 Tennessee Car Insurance

Q: My daughter is about to get her learner’s permit. I have SR22 car insurance. If I had her, my rates will go up, right? Do children with learner’s permits have to have car insurance?

A: Anyone who drives is required to have car insurance, or at the very least drive a car which is insured by someone else. If a driver is part of the household (defined as people who live together and are related by blood, adoption, or marriage) of the SR22 car insurance policy holder, then they must be a named driver on the policy so that the car insurance company can rate accordingly. If they are not added to the policy, the consequences are pretty harsh. Your policy could be canceled, and if your daughter got into a car accident, the company may choose to deny her claim.

Your rates will indeed go up if you add your daughter to your SR22 car insurance policy, probably by about 50%. If you take certain measures, though, you can make it to where it doesn’t rise that much. Make sure your daughter is taking a driver’s education course as she works towards her license so that she can get a discount. You and her can both enroll yourselves in a defensive driving course as well for an additional discount.
