Reader’s Question:

I would like to know the penalties for not having an insurance in the state of Tennessee.

Susan

Thank you for asking Susan.

The minimum liability insurance required in Tennessee as of September 2005 are 25/50/10.

According the Tennessee Department of Safety if you fail to provide evidence of financial responsibility will result to a Class C misdemeanor that is punishable only by a fine of not more than one hundred dollars ($100.00). the drivers license of the violator will be suspended once the state has been informed of the offense.

You can pay at Tennessee’s government website for the reinstatement fee that is usually $20.

Fines must be paid to the court in the city, or county where it was issued. If you have a driver license in Tennessee and are paying these fees late, then the court will notify the department to suspend your license because you fail to pay or appear in court on the violation. To pay the fines and costs also , a payment for the a reinstatement fee must be settled. If you have a driver license issued from a different state and have received a notification of suspension from your license office, you should contact the licensing authorities in your home state. If you fail to pay fines and costs or failure to appear in court on violations issued in Tennessee, this is automatically forwarded from the courts to the state issuing the driver license.

Goodluck!
